SUMMA – KIX LAC, headed by the director of KIX LAC, Raúl Chacón, was invited to the expert meeting on the learning sciences “Harnessing the Dynamics of Science to Transform Learning”, organized by UNESCO at its headquarters in Paris on October 25 and 26, 2023.

Goal of the meeting

The meeting aimed to promote the recommendations of the 2022 Education Transformation Summit and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Declaration on Education Transformation.. The latter articulates the importance of curriculum and pedagogy while emphasizing the need for innovations, driven by the learning sciences but often neglected, to prepare today’s learners for a rapidly changing world. The meeting also explored the role that the Learning Sciences and the international support networks associated with these interdisciplinary areas of study, and the role they can play in supporting inclusive, quality and holistic learning as per SDG 4 on evidence-based policy formulation and implementation.

Why an expert meeting on Learning Sciences?

– Since 1991, interest and research on how the learning sciences can be applied to improving learning outcomes has grown exponentially; however, many initiatives are scattered and remain “experimental” in nature, and many come to an end when funding runs out.

– The gap between scientific knowledge and its application to policy and practice remains huge, and the issue of “translation” remains a challenge.

– The Learning Sciences, referred to as an interdisciplinary area of study that investigates the teaching and learning process and new ways to improve learning outcomes, can suggest alternative or innovative models of teaching and learning that can address the diverse needs of learners and learning environments and institutions, particularly those related to learning content, methods and environments.
