KIX Conversations

The KIX Conversations are engaging spaces for interviews with representatives of KIX LAC and actors in the field of education in Latin America and the Caribbean. In an interview format, the guest discusses and provides his or her perspective on a topic, challenge or project that is being carried out and that is of interest to the educational ecosystem of the KIX LAC countries.
➡️From Reform to Reality: The New Curriculum Transforming Early Childhood Education in Guatemala (in Spanish)
September 2025 – Claudia Morales, Director General of Quality Education Management at the Ministry of Education of Guatemala, shared the main changes and motivations behind the update of the National Basic Curriculum for Pre-primary Education, the collaborative process that made it possible, and the progress and challenges this new curriculum presents in responding to diversity and contemporary challenges in the country’s classrooms. The interview was conducted by Pedro Garret, Project and Research Coordinator, KIX LAC.

February 2025 – Alejandra Cortázar, Senior Fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue, took part and provided a detailed analysis of the main advances and challenges in the region with regard to early childhood education. The interview was conducted by Pedro Garret, KIX LAC Project and Research Coordinator.

August 2024 – Tonnica Dey, Director of Planning, and Dahvis Caldiera, Senior Statistician, from the Ministry of Education of Guyana, spoke about the development of the Education Information and Management Systems (EMIS) in that country. The interview was conducted by KIX LAC Country Support Officer, Rosa María Moncada.

February 2024 – This edition of the KIX Conversations featured Don Howell, president of the Saint Lucia Teachers’ Union and representative for Saint Lucia at the KIX LAC, who spoke about the importance of learning assessment and the role of teachers in this process. The interview was conducted by KIX LAC researcher Manuela Pombo.

September 2023 – We had the participation of Dr. Guerlande BIEN-AIMÉ, coordinator of the Training pillar of InnovEd-Uniq. and representative for Haiti at the KIX LAC center, who spoke about the educational context of the country and the current state of research and the use of evidence. The interview was conducted by KIX LAC researcher Maciel Morales Aceitón.

February 2023 – Mariela Zelada Ocha, regional director of the Early Literacy Network for Central America and the Caribbean – RedLEI – was interviewed by Dr. Maciel Morales Aceitón, researcher at KIX LAC.

October 2022 – This edition of the KIX Conversations featured the participation of KIX LAC representative and president of the Dominica Teachers Association, Mervin Alexander, who was interviewed by Fernanda del Pozo, KIX LAC researcher, who spoke about the impacts of COVID-19, lessons learned and the importance of teacher training today.

July 2022 – In a new edition of the KIX Conversations, we had the presence of Rossny Antonio Peña Almanza, head of the Department of Educational Research of the Ministry of Education of Nicaragua, member of the Network of Educational Researchers of Nicaragua (RIENIC) and representative in the KIX LAC Center for this country, who was interviewed by Dr. Maciel Morales Aceitón, KIX LAC researcher. May 2022 – In this issue, Judy-Ann Auld, RISE researcher in the Faculty of Education at the University of the West Indies, Cavel Hill Campus, was interviewed by Dr. Ivana Zacarias, KIX LAC researcher.

March 2022 – This edition of the KIX Conversations featured Yeny Rivas, Gender Manager of the Ministry of Education of El Salvador and KIX LAC representative for this country, who was interviewed by Maciel Morales Aceitón, KIX LAC researcher.

February 2022 – Rossen Mirón López, head of the Social Studies Area of the General Directorate of Evaluation and Educational Research of the Ministry of Education of Guatemala, spoke about the main challenges in the learning of reading and the importance of a model that can guide teachers, managers, education workers and governments in developing more effective educational policies and strategies.

January 2022 – This edition was attended by Juan Carlos Fernández Saca, National Director of Educational Evaluation of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of El Salvador and representative in the KIX LAC Center for this country, who was interviewed by Mar Botero, KIX LAC Communities Coordinator.

November 2021 – This edition of the KIX Conversations featured the participation of William Thelusmond, executive director of Education For All regrouping (REPT) and representative for Haiti at KIX LAC, who explained the current situation of the education system in this Caribbean country. The interview was conducted by KIX LAC researcher Maciel Morales Aceitón.

November 2021- Dr. Idelia Ferdinand, Senior Education, Research and School Safety Officer of the Ministry of Education, National Reconciliation, Church Affairs and Information of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and representative for that country in the KIX LAC center, told us about the work being carried out on this issue in this Caribbean region. The interview was conducted by KIX LAC researcher Ivana Zacarias.

October 2021 – This edition of the KIX Conversations was attended by the representatives of El Salvador in the KIX LAC, who are also the authors of the research “Leaving? Staying? Returning? Migration dynamics and their effect on the education of Salvadorans”. Estela Armijo, education analyst and David López, coordinator of the FES Program, from the Escuela Superior de Economía y Negocios were interviewed by KIX LAC researcher, Maciel Morales Aceitón.

February 2021 – In this edition of the KIX Conversations delved into the current state of education in Eastern Caribbean countries and the post-pandemic challenges and opportunities that exist. Dr. Neva Pemberton, Technical Specialist of the Educational Development Management Unit of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Commission; and Dr. Claudia Louis, Head of the Planning Unit of the Ministry of Education of Saint Lucia and KIX LAC member, were the guests and spoke about COVID-19 and equity in education.

December 2020 – The director of the GEM Report for Latin America and the Caribbean, Manos Antoninis, together with Javier Gonzalez, director of SUMMA, spoke about the challenges and lessons learned from the GEM 2020 report on inclusion in education.

November 2020 – The Undersecretary of Education of Honduras, Gloria Menjívar, spoke about the teaching field being a not very selected option for students and aspiring students today, highlighting the importance of the teacher training career to sustain the pillar of development of a Nation which is education.
