Launch of white paper “Quality TPD at Scale: Policy Considerations for the Next Decade in Africa”
11 de February de 2026

The Empowering Teachers’ Initiative (ETI), led by SUMMA and the Foundation for Education and Information Technology Development (FIT-ED) within the framework of the TPD@Scale Coalition for the Global South, with support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), launched a new white paper entitled “Quality Teacher Professional Development at Scale: Policy Considerations for the Next Decade in Africa.”
The paper aims to provide African governments with a series of calls to action and policy considerations to build on the progress already made in teacher professional development (TPD) across the continent over the past 25 years.
The paper was launched during a webinar that featured a range of expert voices from different regions of Africa and around the world.
About the document
The policy considerations proposed in the document are designed to help African countries take further steps to “improve teacher policies, education, professional development, and accountability,” a key objective outlined in the African Union’s “Continental Education Strategy for Africa, 2026-2035” (2025). This will ensure that teachers are equipped with the relevant skills that are vital for the future economic and social prosperity of both their own countries and the African continent.
Furthermore, the calls to action and policy considerations are based on data from research conducted across the continent, a survey of 163 stakeholders in teacher education (government officials, university academics and teacher trainers, as well as teacher unions and international partners) from 36 countries, and testimonials from teacher trainers in 12 African countries.
