SUMMA at event on “Monitoring Equity in Education in LAC”, organized by USAID and ACER
23 de September de 2023

SUMMA’s Deputy Director, Rafael Carrasco, took part in a discussion on the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Center’s research on indicators of economic, cultural and social status (ECSS) for monitoring equity in education, organized by USAID’s Global Reading Network (GRN) and the Australian Council for Educational Research.
The online event focused on developing ECSS indicators of quality in education and using program data efficiently and effectively to improve practices.
Carrasco was one of the speakers along with Dr. Alejandra Osses Vargas, researcher at the GEM Center, ACER; and Dr. Ursula Schwantner, Head of the GEM Center, ACER. SUMMA’s Deputy Director spoke on “The case of Chile: 3 decades of NSE relevance in educational policies”.
The GEM Center studied regional and international educational assessments in which LAC countries participate and found a relationship between ECSS indicators and educational outcomes. With these findings, researchers discovered ways to monitor equity in education. The GEM Center also discovered inconsistencies in how large-scale assessments reflected contextualization, including variations to account for geographic and cultural contexts. These inconsistencies make cross-country comparisons difficult.
