KIX LAC at the CIES 2025 conference: Innovation, equity and digital transformation in education
1 de April de 2025

A new edition of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) annual conference took place from March 22-26, 2025, in Chicago, USA. This year’s theme, “Envisioning Education in a Digital Society”, arises from the accelerated transformations driven by technological advances -such as Generative Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things and connectivity technologies- that are changing our daily lives, the world of work and the very structure of society, with significant repercussions in the field of education. Raúl Chacón, Director of the KIX LAC Hub, actively participated in the event, presenting in various sessions, meetings and panels.
On Saturday, March 22 and within the framework of the round table entitled “Brokering the Knowledge Brokers: Are regional hubs the way forward?”,
Sisera Simon, Head of the Human and Social Division of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) together with Raúl Chacón (KIX LAC), made the presentation “Advancing education systems through knowledge sharing and technological innovation: lessons from Latin America and the Caribbean”. The presentation showed the progress made by the KIX LAC Hub as a platform for the mobilization of knowledge, the exchange of experiences and collaboration among educational actors in the region. Challenges such as the development of educational information systems (EMIS), the need for greater investment in research and innovation, and the role of evidence to inform public policies were addressed. The session highlighted virtual and face-to-face experiences, such as technical learning visits in the Eastern Caribbean, and progress towards a regional EMIS, with emphasis on educational equity and the responsible use of emerging technologies.
Subsequently, on Monday 24, during the featured session “Use of outcome mapping and outcome harvesting in the Global Partnership for Education Knowledge and Innovation Exchange: challenges and successes”, Raúl Chacón shared the presentation “Improving education policy and practice through the MEL system: experience of the GPE KIX LAC Hub”. His intervention focused on the experience of designing and implementing a robust monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) system, which has been a key component to enhance its impact in the region.
Both participations were held alongside representatives from the other Regional Knowledge Exchange Hubs (KIX): EMAP, Africa 19 and Africa 21, as well as the International Development Research Center (IDRC), strengthening inter-regional collaboration and global knowledge sharing.
On the last day of the conference, the Director of KIX LAC, together with ROSIE and The Brookings Institution, were part of the panel “Equity considerations when scaling for impact”, where an empirical framework was presented proposing four approaches to incorporate equity in the process: innovation design, contextual adaptation, decision making and the use of equity-focused data.
