The Community of Practice on Gender and Education of KIX LAC, held its third working session and webinar seminar ” Educationalpolicies for teacher training with a gender equality perspective in Latin America and the Caribbean”. teacher training policies with a gender equality perspective in Latin America and the Caribbean”. This meeting, the third of 5 sessions aimed to bring together once again the members of the community and other interested community members and other public interested in the subject to continue working on the process of the process of design and implementation of gender-sensitive initiatives with a gender perspective based on experience, focusing this time on educational policies for teacher training with a gender perspective.
The panel of presentations was opened by Yeni Rivas, gender manager of the Ministry of Education of El Salvador and co-organizer of the KIX LAC community of practice , who made a presentation on “Teacher training as a tool for incorporating equity and equal educational opportunities between women and men”, where he assured that the generation of policies on this issue must be intersectoral, and be based on legal frameworks supported by the educational system so that they can be system so that they can have continuity over time.
She also valued the importance of diagnosing gaps in the education system, The school plays a fundamental role in deconstructing or teaching new learning; “the classic educational system had a sexist education, and those who reproduced it were the teachers themselves , who entrenched inequality, that is why it is of utmost importance to adopt measures against discrimination against girls and women.
Next, Michelle Bratwhite, Project Specialist , Ministry of Education , Grenada, shared the experience of the country where there are still high levels of violence against women and girls . high levels of violence against women and girls, physical abuse and domestic violence. In this regard, the Ministry of Education together with the Ministry of Social Development, Housing and Gender Affairs are working on initiatives and curriculum and curriculum policies that address this issue.
Some of them consider differentiating the types of students in order to include all of them; training for teachers in basic and tertiary education; and the “Spotlight” initiative focused on addressing gender-based violence. This initiative encompasses: introduction of non-traditional families, gender norms, discrimination of LGTBQ+ students, implementation of strategies based on strategies, sensitization work and collaboration of teachers, an inclusive policy in the curriculum and learning processes.
Concluding the panel, Alana Domínguez, representative of the Secretariat of Education of Honduras, shared the experience being carried out at the national level, pointing out that they have been based on Sustainable Development Goal 5, which indicates the empowerment of girls and women.
