{"id":98505,"date":"2026-07-02T10:51:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T14:51:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/summaedu.org\/?p=98505"},"modified":"2026-07-02T14:43:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T18:43:01","slug":"the-kix-lac-and-eti-initiatives-bring-together-evidence-capacity-and-collaborative-learning-to-strengthen-teacher-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/summaedu.org\/en\/news\/kix\/the-kix-lac-and-eti-initiatives-bring-together-evidence-capacity-and-collaborative-learning-to-strengthen-teacher-training\/","title":{"rendered":"The KIX LAC and ETI initiatives bring together evidence, capacity, and collaborative learning to strengthen teacher training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>KIX LAC Hub<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an initiative promoted by the <\/span><b>Global Partnership for Education (GPE) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Canada\u2019s <\/span><b>International Development Research Centre (IDRC)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led in Latin America and the Caribbean by <\/span><b>SUMMA <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/eti.tpdatscalecoalition.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Empowering Teachers Initiative (ETI)<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by SUMMA and the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within the framework of <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/tpdatscalecoalition.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>the TPD@Scale for the Global South<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and with the support of IDRC, launched the regional workshop <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTeacher Professional Development at Scale: Strengthening National and Regional Initiatives Through a Teacher Empowerment Approach.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This collaboration is part of SUMMA\u2019s ongoing work on teacher strengthening, an area that has been addressed through initiatives such as KIX LAC and ETI, which aim to mobilize evidence, promote innovation, and support improvements in educational policies and practices. In this context, <\/span><b>KIX LAC <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contributes its expertise in knowledge mobilization, capacity building, and cross-country learning, while <\/span><b>ETI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provides conceptual and methodological resources developed to advance toward more equitable, effective, and sustainable teacher professional development systems at scale. <\/span><b>The collaboration between these two initiatives <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aims to help countries in the region analyze their own experiences with teacher training, identify strengths and challenges, and move toward models that better respond to the diversity of contexts, career paths, and needs of the teaching workforce.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Pedro Garret, project coordinator and researcher at KIX LAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, welcomed the participants and highlighted that this workshop is part of <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/summaedu.org\/en\/kix-lac\/knowledge-mobilization-cycle-teacher-policies-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Knowledge Mobilization Series on the use of evidence in teacher policies and practices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this context, he emphasized the importance of creating spaces where evidence is not only shared but also discussed and used to guide concrete decisions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his part, <\/span><b>Dante Castillo, director of Innovative Policies and Practices at SUMMA and ETI lead for Latin America and the Caribbean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, presented the region\u2019s main challenges regarding teacher training and professional development. From the <\/span><b>ETI-TPD@Scale perspective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he emphasized that scaling up this process involves analyzing not only the quality of content and methodologies but also the conditions that enable relevant outreach to teachers in different contexts. In this context, the workshop aims to provide tools for countries to review their teacher training initiatives and identify opportunities for improvement related to access, relevance, sustainability, appropriate technologies, and pedagogical support.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also highlighted the value of the regional exchange promoted by this event, noting that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthis workshop could be a valuable contribution and an interesting collaboration for KIX LAC and the countries in the region, as it allows us to examine our professional development systems, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and use some concepts of teacher professional development at scale as a way to assess our systems and consider how to move forward<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">One of the central elements of the event was the exchange of ideas among countries, which made it possible to identify common challenges related to teacher support, access to quality opportunities, and the design of more relevant training processes that recognize the active role of teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From <\/span><b>El Salvador<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Mario Ruiz, Director of Teacher Training at the Ministry of Education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, presented the training strategy associated with the new early childhood curriculum, which has a national scope and a strong component of teacher support and mentoring. He also highlighted the development of brief materials and pedagogical guidelines designed to support daily classroom practice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Lourdes Cartagena, from the General Directorate of Professional Development at the Honduran Ministry of Education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shared progress in using evidence to guide the design of training programs and implementation strategies. In particular, she highlighted the importance of identifying teachers\u2019 actual training needs and strengthening programs focused on methodologies, soft skills, technological competencies, leadership, and support for novice teachers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Yvonne Howell, Senior Education Officer at the Teacher Training Institute of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology of Belize<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, presented her experience with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teacher Learning Institute<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Moodle platform designed to expand opportunities for teacher professional development throughout the year and offer greater flexibility to educators. She also highlighted the shift from isolated training activities toward more structured, process-oriented programs linked to classroom practice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For her part, <\/span><b>Nancy Alarc\u00f3n, Deputy Director of Educational Human Resources Training at the Guatemalan Ministry of Education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shared the experience of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Academic Program for Teacher Professional Development (PADEP\/D)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a policy that has been in place for more than 17 years and has contributed to the professionalization of thousands of in-service teachers. Progress was also presented on webinars, online courses, and initiatives to strengthen initial teacher education.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The session also provided an opportunity to present two <\/span><b>open educational resources <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developed within the framework of the TPD@Scale approach: <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearncreate\/course\/index.php?categoryid=510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a self-paced online course on scaling teacher professional development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aimed at strengthening the capacities of decision-makers and technical stakeholders involved in teacher policies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and an <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/eti.tpdatscalecoalition.org\/resource\/framework-for-strengthening-tpd-systems-with-ict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analytical framework for strengthening teacher professional development systems with ICT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a tool that enables the analysis of teacher professional development initiatives based on multiple dimensions critical to their scaling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process will continue with two new sessions, scheduled for September and November 2026. During these sessions, teams from the KIX LAC countries will work on analyzing specific teacher professional development initiatives using the ETI-TPD@Scale approach. The goal is for each delegation to produce an <\/span><b>analytical report <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that identifies strengths, challenges<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and opportunities for improvement in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teacher professional development policies or programs currently designed and\/or implemented in their countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than just a one-time event, <\/span><b>this workshop reflects the purpose of GPE KIX\u2019s work<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: to build capacity, promote the use of evidence in decision-making, share experiences across countries, and contribute to scaling up innovations relevant to education systems through regional collaboration.
