Education is a basic human right, but to achieve its full potential as a societal\u00a0game-changer<\/a>\u00a0it must be accessible to all. Equal access to quality education helps build a strong foundation for a society that is more gender equal and that in turn reduces\u00a0child marriage<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0child mortality<\/a>, boosts\u00a0economic prosperity and wage equality<\/a>, and even improves\u00a0resilience to climate disasters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Evidence-based decision-making is a core element of the Global Partnership for Education\u2019s (GPE) approach to\u00a0hardwiring gender equality<\/a>\u00a0into its strategy for transforming education. That\u2019s why the\u00a0GPE Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX)<\/a>\u00a0is building and mobilizing evidence to help\u00a0GPE partner countries<\/a>\u00a0understand and respond to barriers to gender equality in specific contexts. It also provides opportunities for more than 70 GPE partner countries to learn from each other about \u00a0how to scale approaches that work best.<\/p>\n

Gender equality features prominently in the KIX portfolio. All KIX\u00a0applied research projects<\/a>\u00a0promote gender equality in their design and implementation and nearly one-quarter of them\u00a0focus specifically on gender equality<\/a>\u00a0themes, including gender-transformative pedagogies and gender-sensitive schools. Many peer learning activities led by KIX\u00a0regional hubs<\/a>\u00a0also directly address gender equality. Initial results from both are already helping to inform policy to enhance gender equality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

How KIX research is already supporting gender-equal education<\/strong><\/h4>\n

One KIX-supported\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0is building evidence to help scale accelerated education programs and education models focused on girls into national policies in Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. Early\u00a0findings<\/a>\u00a0indicate that these programs are only one-third of the cost of one year of primary education (or one-tenth of the cost when we consider the years of education girls can skip after completing an accelerated education program).<\/p>\n

During the 2022\u00a0KIX Symposium<\/a>, we heard that Nigeria is already putting the project to use \u2014 despite the fact that violence has forced some 11,000 school closures in the last two years. Nigeria\u2019s Ministry of Education is drawing on this research to address the needs of the now millions of out-of-school children in the country, including through standardized certification for accelerated education programs.<\/p>\n

The research is proving to be valuable in other contexts as well. Dr. Yatta Kanu, a representative of Sierra Leone\u2019s Ministry of Basic and Senior Education, explained, \u201cWe have been able to get lots of data about who the students are, why they\u2019re dropping out of school, and how we can get them back into\u00a0school.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
