{"id":83805,"date":"2024-12-12T13:19:40","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T16:19:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/summaedu.org\/sin-categoria\/summa-kix-lac-y-la-universidad-de-west-indies-continuan-trabajando-para-fortalecer-la-formacion-inicial-docente-en-el-caribe-oriental\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T13:27:30","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T17:27:30","slug":"summa-kix-lac-y-la-universidad-de-west-indies-continuan-trabajando-para-fortalecer-la-formacion-inicial-docente-en-el-caribe-oriental","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/summaedu.org\/en\/news\/kix\/summa-kix-lac-and-the-university-of-the-west-indies-continue-to-work-to-strengthen-initial-teacher-education-in-the-eastern-caribbean\/","title":{"rendered":"SUMMA &#8211; KIX LAC and the University of the West Indies continue to work to &#8220;strengthen initial teacher education in the Eastern Caribbean.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2022, <strong>SUMMA &#8211; KIX LAC<\/strong> and the <strong>University of the West Indies (UWI)<\/strong>,<\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/summaedu.org\/en\/news\/kix\/summa-and-the-university-of-the-west-indies-uwi-sign-agreement-to-improve-initial-teacher-training-in-the-eastern-caribbean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed a collaboration agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to optimize the use of international evidence in the reform of teacher education programs in the Eastern Caribbean, and to develop a model applicable to institutions in the global south. During its first phase of development, this project was supported by the<\/span><b> International Development Research Centre (IDRC) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To further the consolidation of initial teacher training led by the <strong>University of the West Indies<\/strong>, <b>SUMMA &#8211; KIX LAC<\/b> undertook a technical mission to Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines from November 18 to 22, 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This meeting was attended by the team from the<\/span><b> School of Education of the University of the West Indies: Laurette Bristol, Director; Jason Marshall, Professor; and professors Verna Knight, Sandra Robinson, Coreen Leackock, and Andrea Vieray. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From<\/span><b> SUMMA <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was attended<\/span><b> by Javier Gonz\u00e1lez, Director; Ra\u00fal Chac\u00f3n, Director of KIX LAC; Roc\u00edo Fern\u00e1ndez, UWI Project Coordinator; and Mar Botero, Coordinator of knowledge mobilization and management of KIX LAC Communities. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research associates <\/span><b>Carmen Montecinos and Karin Roa, the Director of the Caribbean Educational Research Centre, Dr. Joel Warrican, and the Education Specialist of the Caribbean Development Bank, Dr. Martin Baptiste, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were also participating.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From<\/span><b> St. Vincent Community College, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Head of the Education Division, Marise Butler, was present.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The primary purpose of the visit was to develop strategic dialogues for the review, implementation, and evaluation of a new curriculum for the <strong>Associate Degree in Education for Primary Education (ADE Primary)<\/strong>. To achieve a comprehensive and collaborative approach, this process involved UWI academics, teachers from the Teacher Colleges and representatives from the school system. The collective discussion on areas for strengthening the curriculum made it possible to build a shared vision of the challenges of initial teacher education in the Eastern Caribbean, consolidating a solid foundation for future progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the week, meetings and presentations focused on key curriculum areas, such as inclusive pedagogical practices, literacy, practical training, and effective pedagogical strategies. Field visits were also made to <\/span><b>Anglicana<\/b> <b>Calliaqua<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Diamond<\/b> <b>primary<\/b> <b>schools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, complemented by a meeting with teacher trainers at S<\/span><b>aint<\/b> <b>Vincent<\/b> <b>Community<\/b> <b>College<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These meetings revealed the challenges faced by these schools regarding the practical training of future teachers and primary school students.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission concluded with a commitment to design and develop a <\/span><b>Professional Development Plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that addresses the identified needs, strengthening capacities collaboratively to ensure the successful implementation of the new curriculum.
